Fiscal Economist

Before joining the OECD as a Fiscal Economist, Alexander Pick worked for over six years as a Social Protection Specialist in the Public Finance Division of the National Treasury of South Africa. During this time, he was part of the inter-departmental task team on social security reform, with specific responsibility for assessing the long-term financial implications of a proposed public pension scheme. He also managed the budgets for South Africa’s department of labour, social security funds, and public works programmes, and he was involved in the implementation of the Expanded Public Works Programme and the development of proposals for a system of National Health Insurance.

Alexander has a master’s degree in Economics from University College London and is a former Fellow of the Overseas Development Institute. Prior to gaining his Masters, he worked for a business intelligence company covering political and economic developments in Asia and Latin America. He has a bachelor’s degree from Oriel College, Oxford, where he read French and Spanish.
