Chief Social Policy Expert

Ronald Wiman functions as the Senior Social Policy Expert in the EU-SPS Programme. He is a Chief Specialist on Global Social Policy at the Government of Finland’s National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL). In addition he functions as the editor-in-chief responsible for the EU-SPS website. 

With three decades of experience in national and global social policy issues, Ronald has worked in various managerial and expert positions at the THL and as Senior Social Development Advisor at the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs. In addition, he has eight years of experience working in developing countries and the UN: He has served as a Senior Social Services Advisor at the Namibian Ministry for Health and Social Services; as a Social Affairs Officer at the United Nations Disabled Persons Unit in Vienna; and as an Associate Lecturer in demography at the UN Regional Institute for Population Studies (UNRIPS), Accra, Ghana. Ronald has also had numerous short-term assignments with, inter alia, the UN, World Bank, WHO, UNICEF, ADB, GIZ and ICSW.

His areas of expertise include social policy, socially sustainable development, disability and development, child poverty and management training. He has written numerous publications and produced several web-based tool boxes, guidelines and information packages. He holds an MA and a Licentiate degree in Social Sciences from the University of Helsinki, Finland and has had specialized training in Demography at the University of Chicago, USA.
