The Department of Public Health and Welfare
- monitors the health, well-being and functional capacity of the different sectors of the population and forecasts future developments. The department investigates the factors affecting health, well-being and functioning and service needs, develops interventions to prevent disease and impaired functioning, and assesses the effectiveness of such interventions.
- promotes the population’s health, safety, and social and psychological well-being by providing knowledge and expertise for decision-makers and professionals at the local, regional and national level. The department researches and supports the equality and inclusion of different population groups and develops methods and services for supporting them. The department also monitors and assesses the effectiveness of national policies and programmes and supports their implementation.
- researches and assesses both the functionality, effectiveness and costs of the social welfare and health care service system and the service needs of the population. The department supports the development and coordination of social security and health and social service system, giving consideration to vulnerable groups and services for different age groups. The department supports social welfare and health care service providers and municipalities in developing services by providing expertise and a knowledge base for supporting planning, decision-making and co-creation.
