Tobacco statistics 2022
Daily smoking among working-age people decreased, use of e-cigarettes increased among young people
About 11 per cent of Finns aged 20-64 smoked daily in 2022 (12% of men and 11% of women). Seven per cent of retired people (65–84 years old) smoked daily (9% of men and 5% of women). Over the past twenty years, smoking among the adult population has largely decreased, although the decline seems to have slowed down in the last few years. (Figure.)
In 2023, five per cent of young people (aged 14 to 20) smoked daily. Daily smoking among young people has continued to decline. While in 2023 six per cent of young boys and four per cent of girls smoked daily, the corresponding proportions in 2013 were 18 per cent for boys and 15 per cent for girls. A substantially larger number of students at vocational institutions smoked daily than students at general upper secondary schools did.
The use of e-cigarettes has remained low in the adult population. One per cent of men aged 20-64 and less than one per cent of women in the age group smoked e-cigarettes daily in 2022. The corresponding figures for current use (daily or occasionally) were three per cent and two per cent. On the other hand, e-cigarette use among young people (aged 14 to 20) has doubled in comparison to 2021. Six per cent of young people used e-cigarettes daily in 2023, compared with three per cent in 2021. 16 per cent of young people reported using e-cigarettes currently (daily or occasionally) in 2023, compared with eight per cent in 2021.
