Research collections

THL Biobank is a remarkable biorepository of both population and disease-specific research collections, which contain high-quality samples and data. The data includes large amount of life-style, demographic and physical data added to sample donors and data determined from the samples. We also host a large amount of genomic and other omics data and can provide professional support for data selection and interpretation. All samples of the THL Biobank belong to a certain research cohort with a specific target group of donors and including a specific set of samples, sample- and donor-derived data and collection protocols. The applied biobank material for research projects doesn’t have to be limited to a specific collection, and suitable samples and data can be requested from the full repository of the THL Biobank.

Information from the Finnish national health registries, such as Care Register for Health Care (HILMO), Cancer Register, Cause-of-Death Register and Drug Imbursement Registers etc., can be linked to sample donors by the separate application process. Linking register data enables long-term monitoring of the donors and increases the value and impact of research.

Currently, samples and data from more than 230 000 individuals are stored in THL Biobank for research use.
