THL Biobank is thrilled to announce its new polygenic risk score (PRS) service
THL Biobank's large dataset of 120,000 imputed genomes from several cohorts offers a possibility to build and use polygenic risk scores in biobank research studies. Polygenic risk scores have revolutionized a new approach to study the genetic architecture of common complex disorders. These scores are used to estimate the lifetime genetic risk of disease and they have shown to be useful in identifying individuals at highest risk, which could enable earlier disease risk screening. The power of categorizing individuals into different risk classes has raised an interest in using the polygenic risk score as a promising prognostic tool and its implementation into clinical approaches has already been suggested.
We are excited to release our first scores for Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, and BMI, calculated for FINRISK Study participants. By combining the scores to standardized lifestyle, anthropometric and biomarker data, as well as the availability of clinical follow-up data from health registers creates unique research opportunities for true personalized medicine studies.
