An Epidemiology Overview and Introduction to Indigenous Health and Wellbeing Research

Welcome to the first session of a webinar series on Indigenous health and wellbeing research. This webinar series is co-organized by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), the Sámi Parliament of Finland, the University of North Dakota, and Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health.

The first webinar will focus on the following themes:
- Population-level health surveillance and how the standard surveillance approach does (or doesn't) work for Indigenous populations
- An overview of current Sámi and Indigenous health epidemiologic research
- Approaches to better conduct research and data collection among Indigenous populations
The webinar will also touch on the following issues that will be more fully addressed in webinars 2 and 3:
- Differences from traditional health and wellbeing research
- Introduction to Indigenous health and wellbeing research
- Cultural and ethical considerations for researchers and research institutions
- Basic principles of culturally sensitive research
The session will be held by Andrew Williams, Assistant Professor at the Department of Population Health, and Executive Director of North Dakota Perinatal Quality Collaborative at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Target group
The webinar is aimed at researchers, students and other interested parties who want to gain and deepen an understanding of Indigenous research methods and the decolonization of research. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions during the event.
